Final Cut training - postponed

I'm sorry but because there has been a delay on the installation of Final Cut in the Mac Suite, we cannot run the Final Cut training session on Friday 3rd October. I've emailed the training provider to arrange an alternative date but haven't heard back yet. I will confirm the new date as soon as I know it.

Apologies.

Swipe Cards

To get your swipe card updated so that you have access to the Mac Suite, you need to see Miss Dillon in the Finance Team. Go through the door that's opposite the main entrance door in Reception.

I've given her a list of all the students in our class so that she can tick your names off and make sure nobody is trying to gain access that shouldn't.

Creative Arts sponsorship opportunity

You should have already seen this on the Sixth Form blog but there is an opportunity to get a fully funded, two-year degree in Creative Media at SAE in Oxford. All the details are on the Sixth Form blog (http://cheney6thform.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/creative-arts-sponsorship-opportunity.html) but if you're interested and want to discuss it, please come and see me. I can also help you with you application form if you like.

HOMEWORK: Jelly Babies deconstruction task

Homework for Tuesday 23rd Sept:

Deconstruct, shot by shot, your Jelly Babies film opening. For each shot, describe (briefly) what is happening in the narrative, but focus more on camera angles/movement and what mood you are trying to create.

All work must be saved onto your blog.

Preliminary Task

Your preliminary task needs to demonstrate THREE key videoing skills:

  • match on action
  • shot/reverse shot
  • the 180-degree rule
You will find information on these three skills on this presentation: http://www.slideshare.net/mrhoward12/prelim-task-continuity-editing?next_slideshow=1

You can also see some videos that show these skills in action:

Foundation Portfolio in Media: Brief

Here is the brief for your Foundation Portfolio in Media (your AS coursework):

You can work in groups of up to FOUR people.

Preliminary exercise:
This is a task that precedes your main task and is a chance for you to practise your skills without the pressure of it counting towards your final grade:

Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

Main task:
The titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes.

All video and audio material must be original, produced by the candidate(s), with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source.

Jelly Babies film opening

For next lesson:

1. You need to have planned how you are going to shoot your Jelly Babies film opening.
2. Bring a camera phone and any materials (drawings, models, props, etc) you need in order to complete your still-frame storyboard.

You will finish this task in Thursday's lesson, ready to present to the rest of the class on Monday 15th September.

See you then,
Mr Kirkaldy

Welcome to AS Media Studies

Hi everyone...and welcome to AS Media Studies,

This course is 50% theoretical (Mr Groves) and 50% practical (Mr Kirkaldy). The theory side will be tested in the exam you'll take at the end of the year. The practical side will be tested in a Media portfolio which will need to be finished by Easter and will be marked by Cheney staff.

YOUR FIRST TASK:
Your practical work will be stored online as a blog, so you need to create your blog address.

1. Go to blogger.com
2. Sign up if you aren't already
3. Create a blog with the following address: cheneyASmedia-yourname.blogspot.co.uk

ALL your practical work needs to be stored on this blog - if it isn't on the blog it doesn't exist.

Let's get to work...

Mr Kirkaldy
